About the author
Frank Conroy (1936 - 2005) was director of the Iowa Writers’ Workshop at the University of Iowa from 1987 until 2005. He also taught at the University of Iowa, holding an F. Wendell Miller professorship. Previously, Conroy was the director of the literature program at the National Endowment for the Arts from 1982 to 1987. The above essay was written during his time at the Iowa Writers’ Workshop.
Conroy was also an author, most famously of the 1967 memoir Stop-Time, nominated for the National Book Award. His other works include the collection of short stories Midair, the novel Body and Soul, and the collection of essays Dogs Bark, but the Caravan Rolls On: Observations Then and Now. His fiction and non-fiction appeared in such journals as The New Yorker, Esquire, GQ, Harper’s Magazine and Partisan Review.
